The Summer in Words Writing Conference is an intimate, workshop-intensive event for serious writers of all genres who wish to either begin an essay, a novel, a memoir or deepen their skills and understanding. Summer in Words will provide not only the ideal location, but a perfect mix of an experienced faculty dedicated to teaching writers the necessary craft and market skills they need to be successful.
This year also expect an extra dose of energy and excitement in the air. Picture, if you can, writers as proud parents with their newborns (books) out in the world. Now imagine that those newborns are being greeted with warm, cradling arms, appreciation, and accolades.
Kelly Williams Brown first book Adulting came out in May is receiving a lot of buzz, rave reviews and has been optioned for a TV series. It was featured in Cosmopolitan, Glamour, The Wall Street Journal, Fox & Friends on Fox News, HUffington Post and multiple local media outlets, among others. Monica Drake’s satiric novel about motherhood The Stud Book also newly released is climbing the amazon.com ratings and garnering terrific reviews. Lauren Kessler’s fascinating book about aging Counterclockwise {My Year of Hypnosis, Hormones, Dark Chocolate and Other Adventures in the World of Anti-Aging}was just reviewed in The New York Times, and Publisher’s Weekly and has been rightly called bad ass. Lauren is going to reading at Powells on June 12 and dark chocolate is involved, so there is obviously some good news about aging. Jonathan Evison is just back from a book tour that set his head spinning for his new novel The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving. It looks like another best seller is in the making. Kari Luna’s YA novel The Theory of Everything is already receiving buzz and the pub date is still a few weeks away.
And have I mentioned that Kari is a Summer in Words alumnus and that three novels were just published or are about to be published by writers who attended last year’s conference? Yowza! I’ve been so jazzed and proud about all the successes going on. In other news: I have a new book forthcoming No Ordinary Days and Melissa Hart who teaches journalism at the University of Oregon is now an Associate Editor at The Writer magazine and has been publishing all sorts of fabulous essays and articles about her adventures and family life. Meanwhile, the versatile Randal Houle has been busy mentoring and inspiring writers and cannot wait to talk about the importance of social media.
The Summer in Words Writing Conference is for aspiring authors and writers exists to: 1) teach writers craft and technique 2) enable writers to learn the inside scoop of publicizing their writing, a necessary skill in today’s marketplace, 3) combine the advantages of a larger conference with that of a small group workshop; and 4) provide a restful setting conducive to accomplishing all of the above (the endless blue of the Pacific as a backdrop).
The faculty: Kelly Williams Brown, Monica Drake, Jonathan Evison, Melissa Hart, Randal Houle, Lauren Kessler, Kari Luna, Jessica Morrell
